Baby Milestones Worth Photographing — A Month-by-Month Guide

The first year of a baby's life contains more change than any other twelve months they will ever experience. Photographing it well means knowing what to look for and when.

Days 0–14: The newborn session

The first two weeks are the window for traditional newborn photography — deep sleeps, natural curls, the extraordinary smallness of new fingers and toes. Book a professional newborn session as early in your pregnancy as possible; most photographers fill this window months in advance.

Month 1–2: First smiles

Social smiles typically emerge between six and eight weeks. This is not a professional-session milestone — it is a home milestone. Keep your phone camera nearby in the morning, when babies are typically most alert and expressive. Natural window light is all you need.

Month 3–4: Tummy time and head control

Once a baby can hold their head up independently, the photographic possibilities expand dramatically. Tummy time on a light-coloured blanket near a window produces beautiful, natural portraits. The look of concentrated effort on a three-month-old's face as they lift their head is genuinely one of the most charming subjects in photography.

Month 9: Crawling and pulling up

The period between eight and ten months is one of the most photogenic in the first year — babies are mobile, curious, and interact with their environment in ways that produce endlessly interesting frames. Document the crawl; it disappears faster than you expect.

Month 12: The first birthday

The first birthday session is the natural conclusion of the milestone year.
